131: The Success Paradox: Why Achieving More Is Leaving Us With Less

May 01, 20264 min read

What if the version of success you've been chasing was never actually yours?

Not the title. Not the revenue target. Not the 5am alarm you set because that's what driven people do. Somewhere along the way, you picked up a definition of success and just kept running with it.

And now, even when you hit the milestones, something still feels off. The list keeps growing. The goalposts keep moving, and you're starting to wonder if you ever actually arrive.

The trap that was never designed to end

The goalposts were never designed to stop moving. That's not a glitch in the system, that's how the system was built, across centuries, cultures, and now, our social media feeds.

The first house becomes the next house. The promotion leads to another one. The revenue target gets hit and immediately replaced with a bigger one. We tell ourselves we just need to push a little harder, achieve a little more, and then we'll feel it. That sense of arrival. That moment where it finally feels like enough.

Only, it never comes. Because it was never supposed to.

"What a paradox that is. The more you chase your version of success, the more you're actually damaging and destroying what it is you're trying to achieve." — Amy Green

This is the success paradox. The harder we chase an inherited version of success, the further we drift from the life we actually want to live. And the more we attach our worth to external metrics, the more we have to keep achieving just to feel okay about ourselves.

Letting go of metrics that were never yours

There’s something that gets lost in the constant chase. Not just time or energy, though it costs us plenty of both. What gets lost is the ability to notice what's already here.

When we are so consumed by chasing a version of success that always sits just out of reach, we stop being present in the life we're actually living. The ordinary moments, the quiet ones, the ones that don't make it onto a highlight reel, start to feel like obstacles between us and where we're trying to get to. When in reality, they're the whole point.

We can't keep building a life we're too busy to live in and call that success.

"We can't attach our worth to the external metrics of success that someone else has decided for us. It just can't work like that anymore." — Amy Green

Letting go of those metrics isn't about lowering your standards. It's about being honest about whose standards you've been holding yourself to, and whether they were ever actually aligned with what matters to you.

What slow, simple success actually looks like

Redefining success isn't a retreat from ambition. It's a return to who you are.

It's asking, honestly and without the noise of everyone else's expectations, what does success actually mean to me? Not what it should look like. Not what it looks like for someone you follow online. What does it feel like to live a life that is genuinely yours?

That question doesn't come with a framework or a formula, but it might be the most important one you ever sit with.

When success is designed from the inside out, it stops being something you chase and starts being something you build. Steadily. Sustainably. In a way that doesn't cost you your health, your relationships, or your sense of self along the way.

That's slow, simple success, and it's available to you right now in the life you're already living, if you're willing to stop long enough to see it.
